On 17 June 2026, representatives of the National Erasmus+ Office in the Kyrgyz Republic attended the official opening ceremony of the Green Deal Center at Bishkek State University named after K. Karasaev. The Center was established within the framework of the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) project Green Deal for Central Asian Universities (GDCAU).

The GDCAU project aims to promote sustainable development and green transformation in higher education institutions across Central Asia by integrating the principles of the European Green Deal into university governance, education, research, innovation, and cooperation with external stakeholders. The initiative also supports the establishment of Green Deal Centers at partner universities as platforms for education, research, innovation, and public engagement on sustainability issues.

The event brought together university management, academic staff, students, and representatives of Erasmus+ projects and initiatives. The ceremony began with the symbolic ribbon-cutting and a presentation highlighting the importance of green economy principles and sustainable development.

The Rector of Bishkek State University welcomed participants and emphasized the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the promotion of green practices in higher education.

During the opening session, the National Coordinator of the Erasmus+ Programme in the Kyrgyz Republic congratulated the university on this important achievement and highlighted the contribution of Erasmus+ projects to strengthening institutional capacities and supporting sustainable development priorities in the region.

The GDCAU project coordinator at the university presented the objectives and expected outcomes of the project, underlining the role of the newly established Center in fostering cooperation among academia, public authorities, businesses, and civil society in addressing environmental challenges.

The programme also featured the presentation of a teaching and methodological guide on “Green Economy and Sustainable Development of the Kyrgyz Republic,” a session on green finance for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and student research presentations on green economy topics.

The Green Deal Center at Bishkek State University will serve as a platform for promoting sustainability-oriented education, research, innovation, and public outreach. As part of the wider GDCAU network, which includes Green Deal Centers across Central Asia and a central hub in Europe, the Center will contribute to advancing climate resilience, environmental awareness, and sustainable development in the region.

The opening of the Center marks an important step in strengthening the role of higher education institutions in supporting the green transition and achieving sustainable development goals in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia.
