Jean Monnet Actions: stimulating teaching and research on the European Union
Higher education institutions actions
These support teaching and research in the field of European Union studies worldwide, covering the study of Europe in its entirety, with particular emphasis on the EU dimension, from an internal but also from a global perspective. The scope of EU studies can be varied as long as the EU angle is explored.
EU studies should promote active European citizenship and values and deal with the role of the EU in a globalised world, enhancing awareness of the Union and facilitating future engagement as well as people-to-people dialogue.

Background
The European Commission started the Jean Monnet Actions in 1989 to promote excellence in teaching and research in the field of European Union studies worldwide.
Since their creation, these actions have focused on higher education institutions. Around 9,000 university teachers and more than 1,000 universities in around 100 countries have received financial support, enabling them to offer new content on European studies as part of their curricula. By connecting academics, researchers and policy-makers, the Jean Monnet Actions have stimulated international dialogue and supported policymakers at both national and international levels.
