On 29 August 2022, a round table on the topic “Development of the Research Potential of Kyrgyzstan through PhD Programs” was held at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic named after K. Dikambaev in Bishkek. The event was organized within the framework of the Erasmus+ DERECKA project (The Development of Doctoral Education and Research Capacities of Kyrgyzstani Academia, 609918-EPP-1-2019-1-KG-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP), funded by the European Union.
The meeting brought together representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Erasmus+ National Office, the Diplomatic Academy, and partner universities involved in the DERECKA project, including:

International University of Kyrgyzstan (IUK)
International Higher School of Medicine (IHSM)
Osh State University
Kyrgyz State University of Construction, Transport and Architecture

Participants of the round table acknowledged the importance of implementing structured PhD programs in Kyrgyzstan, and emphasized the crucial role of Erasmus+ DERECKA in the creation and advancement of such programs. The discussions highlighted the quality of services and academic support already developed within project universities.

Presented and summarized the main results of the DERECKA project
Identified challenges and lessons learned in PhD program implementation
Discussed measures to improve academic supervision, research quality, and faculty competencies
Explored pathways for sustainable cooperation between universities, government bodies, and industry
Adopted a joint resolution outlining next steps for further development of doctoral education in the country
The round table contributed to promoting a stronger research culture and helped define a long-term vision for PhD education aligned with international standards and the needs of Kyrgyzstan’s economy.
