On October 23, 2025, an online seminar dedicated to promoting sustainability and the concept of “green campuses” in Kyrgyzstan’s higher education sector was successfully held. The event was jointly organized by the National Erasmus+ Office in Kyrgyzstan and the Kyrgyz State Technical University named after I. Razzakov.

The seminar brought together a diverse group of participants, including university administrators, academic staff, researchers, student representatives, environmental organizations, civil society actors, and media professionals. The discussions focused on how higher education institutions can adopt environmentally sustainable practices, integrate environmental education into curricula, and engage students and communities in green initiatives.

The main objectives of the seminar were to introduce practical approaches to developing green campus strategies, share successful experiences from Kyrgyzstan and abroad, and foster collaboration between universities working toward sustainable development and climate action.

The event opened with welcoming remarks from the National Coordinator of the Erasmus+ Programme in Kyrgyzstan and the Rector of the Kyrgyz State Technical University, who emphasized the vital role of universities in building environmental awareness and embedding sustainability into education and campus operations.

The first session explored global trends and policy frameworks in higher education sustainability. A lecturer from the Berlin School of Business and Innovation (Germany) provided an overview of international practices and opportunities for higher education institutions to align with global sustainability goals.

This was followed by a presentation from an assistant professor at the University of Agder (Norway), who discussed how universities can act as “architects of sustainable social norms” by embedding sustainability principles into their governance, teaching, and everyday campus culture.

The seminar also featured case presentations from the Kyrgyz State Technical University, highlighting the university’s efforts to implement green and digital technologies and promote youth engagement in shaping an environmentally conscious and sustainable future for Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyz State Technical University shared its own experience through two case studies: “Implementation of Green and Digital Technologies at KSTU” and “The Role of Youth in Shaping Environmental Culture and a Sustainable Future of Kyrgyzstan.”

In the final session, international speakers and local experts engaged in a panel discussion session on “Student and Community Engagement for Sustainability”. The discussion showcased successful examples of student-led initiatives and emphasized the importance of collaboration between universities, local communities, and public institutions in advancing sustainability goals.

By the end of the seminar, participants gained a deeper understanding of green campus development, practical tools for integrating sustainability into higher education, and initial ideas for action plans tailored to their institutions.

The event served as an important step toward strengthening sustainability practices in Kyrgyz higher education and fostering international cooperation for a greener and more resilient future.
